Here in the US, it's Thanksgiving week, and many of us are getting ready to celebrate with food, family and festivities. The centerpiece of most Thanksgiving meals is turkey...but not a turkey vulture!!!

Turkey Vultures are so named because their heads vaguely resemble that of an actual turkey, but you probably wouldn't want to eat one. If you've ever gotten close enough to one to smell it, you'd know why! However, vultures serve an important purpose in our ecosystems. They eat dead animals almost exclusively, so they're kind of like nature's garbage collectors.

Don't worry, I'll show you a real turkey tomorrow!!! 🤣

Can you find the bird in this photo?

Nature can have such amazing camouflage. I'd never spot birds like this if they stood still. Fortunately for me, they have to move to forage. The second photo is a closeup where the bird is more easily spotted.

We visited Rhode Island at the end of October, and I four new bird species for my life list. Unfortunately this is the only one I have a good photo of! The others were a Purple Finch and a Winter Wren, which I only heard and never saw, and a Harlequin Duck, which I photographed but it's so distant as to only be useful for identification purposes.

I still came home happy!!!

Guess what I haven't told you yet?! I had a new ya

Guess what I haven't told you yet?! I had a new yard bird last month! This stunning male Scarlet Tanager visited us for just a few minutes before I lost sight of him. I was only able to take photos through the closed window in our family room, but the new camera setup did a great job, I think.

You might wonder about the color as compared to the common name. Male Scarlet Tanagers are actually, well, scarlet red! But only in the breeding season. During the fall and winter, their red feathers fall out (molting), and are replaced with yellow ones. They end up looking almost exactly like the females of this species, except the males have darker wings.

I sure hope he will revisit us next spring as he makes his trip back north!
